Erupting volcano model with cross section
A large demonstration model for teaching the structure and eruption of a stratovolcano (stratovolcano) in 7th-9th grade classes. On one side of the cross section, the internal parts of the volcano are labeled (chimney, magma chamber, layers, crust, mantle, etc.), and on the other side, letters that can be used to check knowledge.
Use in teaching: the model is suitable for illustrating the topics of volcanism and the internal structure of the Earth in geography. The reaction of baking soda and vinegar, during which carbon dioxide is released, allows you to relate a volcanic eruption to the acid-base reaction discussed in chemistry class. By changing the proportions of the reagents, you can discuss with students its effect on the intensity of the eruption.
Materials needed for the experiment (not included): baking soda (½ tbsp), vinegar (¼ cup or approx. 60 ml), red food coloring (4-5 drops), transparent, yellow or orange dishwashing detergent (½ tbsp).
Safety and maintenance: Wear safety glasses and a lab coat when performing the experiment. Clean the model with warm water without abrasives and do not allow the lava solution to dry on the model.
